Groupwork on Number Bonds

The children had done a groupwork on Number Bonds. Each group was required to use snap cubes to find out what other numbers make 5,6,8,9 and 10. Then they had to record their findings onto the worksheet. After everyone had completed the task, I went through the answers. I also gathered feedback from the children on how co-operative their group members were. Some children had conflicts and were so angry as they related their bad experience. I gave them some methods on how conflicts could be solved. The other groups also shared with the class on their success in conducting a cooperative groupwork.

"Snakes" in our Classroom!

I bought two toy snakes from IKEA. It cost $1.90 each. It was so cheap! I bought two and decided to put in class for the children to play. They loved the snakes so much! They would play with the snakes whenever they could. Of course, they asked for my permission before 'releasing' the snakes. I would allow them to do so only if most children had completed their class work. I wouldn't want them to distract those who were still doing their work. When It was time to continue my lesson, the children would have to put the snakes back to sleep. I would like to thank Jasper Chia for helping me to 'take care' of the snakes. He would make sure that the two snakes were coiled up and placed neatly on top of the cupboard. Once again, Thank you, Jasper!

Our first group work

The children did their first groupwork in class. In groups of four, they had to complete the given Maths task. Before I started, I talked to them about some rules in doing group work. For example, they should distribute their work equally. There should not be any quarrel too. The children were quite co-operative during their groupwork. I even identified a few of them who showed some leaderskills in leading their members to complete the task. It was enjoyable and I promised to give them more groupwork in future.

Student of the Week

Every fortnightly, one or two students from each class would be chosen as 'Student of the Week'. He/She would receive a certificate specially signed by our principal, Mrs Goh.

This week's Primary 1C 'Student of the Week' awards were presented to Dion Heng and Mirrah who would be the monitor and monitress for Term 1. Both of them also had a chance to paste their 'star card' on 1C 'Honour board'. They were so proud of themselves as they pasted their stars.

Do you want to be 'Student of the Week'? Well, You can! It is not difficult at all. You have to be a student model who had set a good example for others to look upon or done a good deed. It is so simple, isn't it? Go for it, children! Who knows, YOU could be the next star on the 'Honour board'!

Fruit & Vegetable Day

It was Fruit and Vegetable Day. The children came to school with fruits. Some brought from home, while some bought their fruits from canteen. They had fun eating fruits during recess and were so busy showing off the fruits to their friends. A few children even shared fruits with their friends. I was with them, celebrating Fruit and Vegetable Day too. I had vegetables--- Cai Xin in my Marconi soup. Heehee.....

We love PE lesson!

Finally, there was no rain! The weather looked threating with some dark clouds but I carried out the lesson. I did not want to disappoint the children. I took the children to my favourite PE area (Open area behind the canteen stalls) to have PE. The PE monitor and monitress led the children with warm-up exercise. Then we revised on side and backward running. The children enjoyed most was the race between the boys and girls. The number of boys and girls was perfect!--14 boys VS 14 girls. Oh my! The children could run really fast! The race was very competitive and they did a great job. The winning team for our first race was..... the BOYS Team! Well done, boys!

Height and Weight

I took the children's height and weight during PE lesson. It was suposed to be an easy task. However, I took 30 minutes to take their height and weight. It was because the children were very curious of their friends' weight. They would gather around me and try to peek at the readings. I had to chase them away whenever I was recording the reading. Some were making fun of their friends who weighed more than 30kg. "Wah! You are so heavy! So fat!" That was why I had to chase the curious little ones away. To prevent them from announcing their friends' weight to everyone. Haha...

Greater, More, Fewer and Smaller

We learnt about More & Fewer (To compare things) and Greater & Smaller (To compare numbers). The children demonstrated the key words through actions. They were so busy stretching their hands widely and shrinking their hands, whenever I mentioned the keyword.

My "Book of Numbers"

The children made their own numbers book. I helped them by making the booklets. Then I instructed them on what to do and how they could decorate their own personalised book. Only a few of them were able to do a wonderful job. Some were too lazy to colour. "Miss Lee, can I don't colour? So tiring..." Some children were asking me. However, I insisted them to do a proper job. I wanted them to be proud of their work and did not want them to be lazy. Therefore, I rejected those who did not colour or decorate their book. The next day, I received their booklets. Wow... every booklet was so nicely done!

Left hand or Right hand?

I realised that some children were unable to differentiate left hand and right hand. Therefore, I invented a way to help them to remember. I asked all of them to make the letter 'L' with their index and thumb (both hands). The hand that made the correct 'L' would be their left hand. Surprisingly, it worked! So whenever I said "Turn to your left", I would see the children put up their hands to make the letter 'L'. Once they confirmed the correct 'L', they would turn to the correct direction. :)

Play hard and also study hard!

We had already started our lesson. I trained the children to colour their group colour on the right hand side of every set of worksheet. It would be easier for me to return to them after marking. I also made use of their little whiteboard to check on their understanding. The children loved mental sums and challenges! When I read a question to them , they quickly wrote their answer on the whiteboard and held it high up for me to check. With one look across all the whiteboards, I could spot their mistakes. One stone kills two birds. The children enjoyed the fun, while I could check on them. Haha....

Our First IT lesson!

It was their first computer lesson. I brought the children to the computer lab after their recess. I did not tell them where I was going, as I wanted to give them a surprise. When we reached the lab, the children got excited as they saw computers in the room. I arranged them according to their register numbers and assigned them to their seats. I did not conduct the lesson. I was there to maintain discipline. We had Mr Jeff to conduct IT lessons for the children. As it was their first IT lesson, it was abit chaotic. Whenever they saw a different screen from Mr Jeff, they got panic. Then they started screaming for Mr Jeff and I for help. Haha... It was messy but good learning experience for them. At least they won't feel panicking after a few practices. Who knows? The children might not even need our help in using the computer in future!

Ding! Ding! FREEZE!

We did something really fun. I used to have problem in drawing pupils’ attention, especially when they were engaged in activities. Therefore, I invented a ringing bell command. I tried out last year and my ex-1C pupils enjoyed themselves so much!
I taught this command to my current 1C pupils. They were excited as I explained to them how the command worked. Then we tried it out. I made the children walk and run in the classroom, making alot of noise. Then I pressed the bell twice. Upon hearing the two bells, they clapped once, shouted 'FREEZE", put up their two hands (as if surrender) and stopped moving. They could not even move their fingers. At this point, I gave my instruction or announcement. Next, I pressed the bell again and pupils quickly went back to their places quietly and sat up straight. We had a few practices and it worked! Oh my, the children were so thrilled! They were more alert, as they would never know when I would press the bell. Now, I could save my trouble, shouting and shouting in class.

Which group are you in?

The children were allocated to the various groups—Pineapple, Strawberry, Pear, Tomato and Orange. I managed to take their 'group' photos too. Look at their happy faces!
Orientation had ended. I would be starting my lesson next Monday. Are you ready, children? Let's make every lesson interesting and fun!

Second day of school

To start the day, I collected books from them. There would be more books and items to be collected. I was pleased with their behaviour while waiting for me in the classroom. They were quietly seated.

The children did a simple journal on the topic 'First day of school'. Instead of writing sentences, they were allowed to draw. I wrote a few sentences on the board for them to copy. The better ones were able to write additional sentences.

Are you seeing double?

I have a pair of twins in my class! I am still trying to identify them. The girls are very cute. They teach me how to identify them by their watch colour and water bottles. The girl with name tag is Jelane and the other is Jelynn. Jelane who wears a white watch is the elder sister, while the younger Jelynn wears a blue watch. What if they exchange their watches and water bottles?? Oops! I will be confused again!

First day of School

It was the first day of school. The little ones were so excited. So was I. I was glad that none of them cried for parents. They were quite well-behaved in the hall. After pledge taking, I brought the children back to their classroom.

As it was the first day of orientation, I started off with setting rules. I taught them the correct way of greeting a teacher, proper manner, partnered them up with their buddy, assigned seats to them and collected some books. The children were so relieved after I collected their books. "Wow... My bag is so light now!" some of the children said. Haha..I had a great laugh!

Welcome to Pri 1C!

Hello everyone! I am Miss Lee Siew Kiang, form teacher of Pri 1C. Before I start my posting, please allow me to tell you more about myself.

I have been teaching in Park View Primary School since 2004. It is my third year teaching Pri 1C. I won't say that I am an experienced P1 teacher, as there are still many things for me to learn and explore. I love to 'work' with lower primary children. I'll keep them busy, happy and eager to learn.Because of my love and passion towards them, I am willing to try out new initiative to make their learning fun, rewarding and exciting.

Creating a class blog is one of my many initiatives. I started class blogging last year. Many positive and encouraging compliments were received from parents, students and fellow colleagues. Of course, I was very happy and glad that my effort was not wasted.

I hope that this blog can help you stay informed about what we are doing and see how much we enjoy ourselves in class. Don't forget to check out the blog regularly and watch your child BLOOM through Primary 1C Class Blog! Stay Tune!
